There's a version of the current AI moment where the lesson organizations draw is that AI makes regulated engineering impossible.

Unauditable changes. Agents acting outside their scope. Outputs nobody can trace to an authorization decision. Every government IT shop that's been on the fence about AI adoption just got handed another reason to stay there.

I understand why that reading is tempting. But it's the wrong lesson.

The False Dichotomy

The industry has framed this as a choice: move fast with AI, or maintain compliance and governance. That framing assumes these are opposing forces — that governance is friction, and AI is momentum, and you have to sacrifice one for the other.

That assumption is wrong. And I can say that with some confidence because we've been running the alternative model in production for over a year.

The Same Muscle

Here's what I've come to believe, after more than a decade doing engineering in environments where "we'll sort out the audit trail later" was never an option:

The discipline that makes regulated engineering work is exactly the discipline that makes AI-assisted engineering safe. They're the same muscle.

Change control. Scoped authority. Documented decisions. Human checkpoints before production. Rollback readiness. Traceable causality from requirement to deployed artifact. If you already operate your engineering organization this way, adding AI doesn't break your model — it accelerates it. The AI operates within your governance framework, not around it. Every action it takes is as traceable as every action a human engineer takes, because the framework requires traceability regardless of who or what is doing the work.

If you don't operate this way, AI will expose that gap faster than anything you've ever deployed. Not because AI is uniquely dangerous, but because it removes the natural friction that was masking your process debt.

What "Built Right" Looks Like

The ones who ask, before they deploy an agent: "Can I explain, to an auditor, everything this agent did and why?" If the answer is no, the agent shouldn't be in production.

The Question to Ask

Every organization that wants to use AI in a regulated environment should be asking right now: do we have the process infrastructure to use it responsibly? Not "do we have the right tool" — that question is easy. The harder one is whether the framework exists to operate that tool in a way that produces auditable, defensible, compliant output.

For most teams, the honest answer is not yet. And closing that gap is harder than subscribing to another platform. It requires rethinking how engineering work is authorized, tracked, and documented — which is the same rethinking that FedRAMP has been asking organizations to do for years.
